It is thought that all Spaniels originated in Spain, where they were associated with royalty. The Spanish Spaniel is recognised as a separate breed, and Ruby here is a beautiful example. Now six years old and, like so many dogs in Spain, was rescued from a cruel end at only 14 weeks – one of a litter of unwanted pups.

Ruby is a happy, playful, loving, and popular Spaniel that is very gentle with children – the perfect family pet. She was a delight to draw, and I wanted to make a point of capturing her bright eyes and alert posture.
